New Shingles Around Roof Vent

Press new shingles onto the caulk and use nails at the top of each shingle to fully secure them to the roof.

To level out an existing asphalt shingle roof rip down reduce the height of two courses of shingles as shown in the drawing below. Leave the old valley flashing in place and install new over it. An aluminum ridge vent has a mushroom shaped profile combined with a wide flange on both sides that sits on top of the roof shingles. Otherwise replace it with a new one that will fit the hole or pipe.

Repair is costlier on a per square foot basis because it is more time consuming to integrate new shingles into a roof here and there than to install them over the entire roof. Slide the new flashing over the vent pipe and under the shingles above the pipe.
